Beginner's Guide to World of Warships

What you need to know before the fight.

World of Warships

World of Warship may be a free-to-play game, but it's also a game of incredible depth. It certainly surprised us and it took us several hours of testing to figure out what we were doing and what to focus on.

We want to help you avoid some early mistakes by helping you unlock your favorite ships and join the action. We'll walk you through everything you'll find in Screen Port and show you what to expect when you start clicking around.

Home screen navigation

World of Warships

After entering World of Warships, take a moment to browse the options and see what you can and can't do.

Alternative: You will see a gear icon in the top left corner. Here you'll need to adjust your video settings to match your computer's capabilities, and you'll want to turn off the sound

But you: You'll see another anchor below the gear icon in the top left corner of the screen. By clicking on this icon, you can choose which port you want to see for the home screen We are personally fans of the New York, but you can choose whichever one you prefer.

Navigation menu: At the top of the screen you will see some menu options in the middle. These are ports, modules, search trees and profiles. We'll go into more detail about some of them, but for now you can click through to see what each one has to offer. Home is the screen you're currently using and Profile gives you some details about your time in the game We'll talk specifically about the other two, modules and research trees.

Contacts and channels: If you move your attention to the bottom left of the screen, you will see an icon with three dots. By clicking on it, you can search for players and add them to your contact list so you can join them in various game modes.

Create the partition: At the top of the screen, next to the big button that says Battle, is the "Create Category" option. This is basically your team feature, which lets you form a group with people from your contact list. When you start a match, everyone in your division is on the same team.

Cell: At the bottom of the screen you will see some slots with holders and a list of how many additional slots you have. You can buy more, but it's not necessary for your average gamer. Basically, you can only have so many containers active at the same time. As you start unlocking new and better versions of your favorite ships, right-click on any old ships you're not using and turn them off.

Random and cooperative battles: To the right of the top battle button is whether you want to start a co-op battle (you and your teammates against the AI) or, even better, a random battle with a random game mode. We'd recommend playing the first few rounds to get the hang of things, but jump into Random Battles as soon as possible. If you play against the AI, you will not reach your potential.

Tech Tree - Choosing the right fleet

It's not just about choosing the right pot, it's also about the right place. When you start the game, look at the quest tree at the top. When you open it, you can choose which country's fleet you want to search If you do, you'll quickly find that Japan and the US have the most options, with the USSR and Germany far behind.

Our advice for new players would be to focus on playing as the US or Japanese team to unlock more ships. At the time of writing, there were no battleships or aircraft carriers for the USSR or Germany, which can be a major obstacle for players attempting these roles.

Quest Tree - How to unlock new ships

World of Warships

Look at the search tree and focus on the United States. You will find that your starting ship will be the Erie (a cruise ship) and the only ship you can unlock from there is the Chester (another cruise ship). When you arrive in Chester, you can choose which direction you want to go. You can change vessels and penny. Louis, then your first battleship, the South Carolina. However, you can enter the Destroyer class and unlock Sampson.

If you hover over the next ship you want to unlock, you'll see that it has two stats. One is the asking price and the other is the buying price. The first is unlocked with Ship XP. If you want to see how much you have, look at the ships you've unlocked today in this tech tree. Once you have XP, you can research your next ship and then use Exchange Credits to unlock it. If you're not sure which ships you can unlock and in what order, look for arrows that connect one ship to another. It is a very simple and straightforward system.

Modules - Customize your ship

When you open the module panel from your port screen, you will see the currently equipped ships and various customization options. As with unlocking a new ship, each of these steps requires a research price and purchase price to be completed, and this in turn costs the ship XP and trade credits.

It's not worth buying upgrades for ships you use for the first time in the game. Instead, wait until you find a ship you really like with better stats and work on upgrading it When you find you really like Destroyers, find one or two you keep coming back to and use them to level your hard earned rewards make.

When you're ready and clear everything on the home screen (gateway), jump into battle alone or with your friends. Matchmaking is great in World of Warships , so you'll have no problem finding a good match with equally experienced (or novice) players.
