Review – Flossen Hoch!

2 to 4 players, over 4 years old, with a time of 15 minutes

Review version of Flossen Hoch! , developed by Grein-Bottcher, provided by the Zoch Verlag team.
Flossen Hoch - Art Box
The theme, like many Zoch titles, is a bit abstract/cumbersome, but if it helps with the artwork and fun, there's no reason to complain. The theme of this memory game is that the penguins are running a race as part of an Antarctic festival. However, in order to move along the track, penguins must remember where the longest fish are in the Arctic sea and move along the track only based on the length of the fish taken from the sea. Obviously the fish don't move much, because they are already dead and appear to be frozen in Iceland .

Below is an overview of the game divided into 5 sections . And in the end , who do we think will love it? . Therefore, if you do not want to read the entire review, just scan the title you are interested in.

game components
1 Arctic sea and a plate called the outer path or swimming path with a central area where the fish can hide.

A 4-player tile set consists of a penguin wearing a hat and fur scarf in green, yellow, red, or purple, plus three players of colored fish, one short medium fish, and one long fish.

Game configuration
Place the game board in the bottom of the box, aligning the holes in the outer layer with the corresponding holes in the plastic toy container.

Each player chooses one of the penguins and all the fish of the corresponding color.

Flossen Hoch - Trying to find the right color fish Then players take turns hiding their fish in the arctic sea, for example. Put their three fish into the holes in the center of the board so that only the fish heads are visible.

In a game of two or three players, take turns hiding the fish of the remaining colors.

Glue the three fish bones and the rainbow into the spaces in the center of the board.

Select the start player and switch.

how to play
On your turn, you throw mushrooms.

When heads display a color, starting with the player who has thrown the dice, each player advances clockwise by removing a colored fish (or rainbow fish) from the "Go Fishing" / Arctic seaboard.

If the hook shows a fish, players take turns drawing one of their colored fish (or rainbow) off the board again.
Flossen Hoch - Children play
If a shark's fin appears on the hat, immediately shout "Shark Alert." All players simultaneously try to catch the longest fish of each color.

If you answer correctly on the dice, the players move their way in the order of play: If you roll a fishbone, it will not move.

When moving for the first time, place the penguin in the first hole of the line, then measure the length of the fish you removed and move the penguin to the hole directly in front of the fish. If there is already a penguin in that slot, you can move it to the next available slot.

When your movement takes you to one of the corner icebergs, you'll launch your way to the next available pool. The distance isn't measured, it's just the next hole around the corner.
Flossen Hoch - Penguins
After all eligible players have moved the penguins, starting with the main player, you will return the fish to the sea at any available location on the sea.

Diz moves to the players on the left and the next person starts a new round.

The winner is the first penguin to reach the end of the race.

What were we thinking?
I love penguin (and pirate) games for no logical reason, so I was looking forward to seeing this one.

However, upon opening the box, our initial impression was that it contained "a lot of boxes for a short playing time": one set of rules, a board, a cardboard sheet with different fish and penguins, a dice and a plastic box. Given the €22 price tag, I doubt many would find it that expensive
Flossen Hoch - Big chest, but not too much
The artwork is beautiful and the cards are of reasonable quality. However, since this game is intended for kids ages 4 and up, I was wondering if the inclusion of cards and a plastic case would handle the extended, inaccurate (embarrassing) play you'd enjoy with younger kids.

My blog readers or Zoch followers will know they have a whole bunch of memory games and this is another game from their stable. The game may seem pedestrian at first, but when kids realize they can move fish in the sea, we've definitely seen the increased complexity and fun/excitement that comes with it as well.

The kids we played with (although none were of a minimum age at the time of writing) had a lot of fun, but if our experiments continue, we might test the durability of some of them. Since ist durm Drin definitely attracted a lot of attention, with this game they wanted to come back a lot. Flossen Hoch was told from a parent's point of view. and/or other memory games engage the brain to a greater extent than Da ist durm Drin and therefore have greater developmental benefits.

If children have trouble with memory, the game can be simplified at first by asking them to return the fish to its original place, even if this requires that the adult's memories function at full capacity.

It should be understood that playing at such a young age helps to internalize basic social rules, accept that we cannot win all the time, respect others and follow a set of rules. Engine controls have been added, meaning replacing the fish in the central game board slots. Unfortunately, if studies are to be believed, many parents find games with their children boring or believe that games should be digital rather than analog.

Who do we think would love it?
Kids are more likely to love penguins and spotting fish bones than whole fish, with the added ethnic element that we think most kids under ten will enjoy.

Parents and professionals who work with children will find an advantage in this new game. Not the least of which is the energy and commitment that the game will generate among the kids vying to outwit the competing penguins.

Social players and gamers are unlikely to find much interest in this game, unlike many other Zoch games that are often used as fillers for game nights.
