2-4 players, ages 8 and up, game duration 30 minutes
A review copy of Christoph Kanzler's Riff Raff was kindly provided by our friends at Zoes Verlag .
It is a tactile skill game with quality elements based on a pirate theme. At the conclusion of the play, for some unusual reason, Captain Bullseye decides that he must carry his cargo on board so as not to "capture" it. Given the possibility of losing cargo due to ship motion, not to mention a trained crew, the last thing a captain is concerned about is the crew with the crew. Like most games, don't worry too much about the theme, it's loosely put together and doesn't let you control it. However, we think it's a real gem of a game, so read on.
Below is an overview of the game divided into 5 parts . And finally, who do we think he loves? . So if you don't want to read the whole review, just scroll down to the desired topic.
Game elements
Consists of 1 wooden boat hull, lighted keel, 1 mast, 6 pieces to build 3 meters and various other components that allow the boat to move.
2 wave racks on which the boat is balanced
4 player ships (1 to 10) in blue, red, gray, purple and 8 wooden cargo tokens; A light blue box, an orange barrel, a blue team member (at first some players think it's a monkey), a canoe, a green box (probably a tea box), a blackboard, a large red bottle, and a gray . one.Mouse mouse !
A plastic frame was found in the box
Game setting
Place two wave plates in a plastic box to look like tower waves.
Build your ship and make it hang above the waves, suspended by heavy clevis "on the tower".
Each player takes a deck of cards and 1 of the deck's 8 charges (not color coded for each player), which should be clearly visible in front of you. The numbers on the map correspond to the number of ships and weapons.
Choose a beginner player. This is believed to be a veteran player.
How to play the game
At the beginning of each round, each player chooses a card and places it on the table in front of them. All players reveal their cards at the same time.
The player who played the highest card immediately becomes the new captain. If multiple players play the highest number, the current captain decides which player will be the new captain. In social situations when playing with adults and not with children / after dinner, the combination is always relationship / favorite.
The new captain begins his journey by choosing one of his cargo and trying to place the number on the deck that matches his ticket. After the captain of the ship completes the trip, the player who played the second highest number passes, and so on. If several players play the same number, the captain determines the order of moves made by those players (see previous comments about favourites).
If the space is in yards (about 5-10) and there is already an item, the player can place two items. However, both of them should see it through to the end once they have decided. Unlike other efficiency-based games, after an initial trial, you can change the class of cargo you're trying to load onto the boat if you think a different item might be more suitable. However, I did not see any success when I put two items.
The round ends after each player's turn. Played cards remain face up and are not available until the end of the game.
The following rules must be observed when loading.
• Each load can be stored or hung on the board with one or two hands.
• The item can be dropped on the side of the ship, but not on any other place on the ship. Unfortunately, it was this rule that prevented the monkey or any member of the crew from sleeping on one arm of the trunk.
• Loads that are already safely (!!!) stored during the loading process cannot physically touch the player, but can be moved by the load that the player wants to use.
When the load falls off the deck, as it does, your turn ends and you may not place a second load if you indicate that's your objective.
When the cargo falls from the ship, the active player must try to catch as many fallen pieces as possible. Occupied units are removed from the game, and those not occupied by active players are still waiting to be loaded onto the deck in the units in front of them.
The winner of the game is the first one with no payout upfront or the lowest payout after all the cards have been played.

What were we thinking?
The boat is of strong construction, although they are afraid to put the mast in the hole in the deck and risk breaking the fenders that serve as stops for three meters. The steel is heavy and this is a very sensitive boat that will move if hit by a few feet. Everything from the box to the shipping is high quality, not just plastic.
For players who enjoy zoo games, the card mechanic will be very familiar as seen in Niagara and more recently Kalimambo . Finally, this method gives every player the same options and knowledge to use all the numbers whether they like it or not. It differs from typical UK street games where the players use dice and have no control over which numbers are drawn and can win or suffer more due to luck.
The game claims that the first captain is a veteran player, and it looks like the veteran was made to try to dominate the previous game. During the game, the ability of the captain to decide who goes when the players show the same number gives tactical freedom to those who choose to increase or decrease the burdens in front of their teammates. To some extent, this may have an egalitarian effect, helping the less fortunate and perhaps hindering the better. Of course, young players may miss these opportunities or succumb to peer pressure when logic goes out the window.
The game is easy to understand and although it depends on the cards the opponent plays, he chooses which cards to play and which weapons to try. When played by adults, Riff Raff is a guessing game where everyone tries to guess what their teammates can do and adjust their card selection accordingly. Regardless of where you enter, there are rarely easy charging options.
If you live with a certain amount of luck, which level is not unusual in family games and games enjoyed by social players, then there will be a lot of laughter and fun in this game. But, sometimes it's a boring game when you try to get your cargo safely to the ship. After passing the test, I definitely found myself sitting back with my arms folded and taking a deep breath.
Some players inevitably have better agility, weight and skill than others. However, when one player lost in style (thinking his loss was a "collector's game"), he was laughing and clearly having a good time. In another case, a player played the same game, but lost the first game so much that he immediately agreed to the second game.
Some players believed that Riff Raff was similar to Jenga and Buckaroo (games more familiar to British families), but Riff Raff was top notch. You will immediately be asked where to shop (see retail suggestion to the right). My blog). .

Who do we think he loves?
Families, and especially those looking for something more challenging/fun than Jenga or Buckero.
Volunteers and professionals who work with children and others who want to help them develop fine motor skills and determine shape and weight.
Social gamers, especially those who enjoyed the dynamic dynamic of previous Zouk games, especially Bausack , Bambolio and Hamesterroll .
Players looking for something very different from traditional card and board games can check out Paul Lister's ( Board Gameguru ) positive reviews in the weekly newsletter.
Adults after a few drinks.
